Kyle Sargent, A Hire That Will Put You At Ease

Hank Hooper, Associate Athletic Director
Homework, no problem.  Newly named head coach of Mullen’s hockey program, Kyle Sargent, has already jumped feet first into the job studying game film and familiarizing himself with the current roster.  When one is born and raised in New Hampshire and spent extensive time in Canada, well, hockey… it’s like breathing.  It’s just what one does, and Coach Sargent is breathing big.  That driving force and his desire to be a part of a faith-based culture are what led him to seek the head position and is what will push him to build on past successes.  “It’s both exciting and humbling to be named as a head coach at Mullen. There are legendary names who’ve coached athletics at Mullen across the years, and the standards that they have set are appropriately high. As head hockey coach, that means that I must strive to meet those standards in everything we do in the hockey program. I’m honored and blessed to have this opportunity to serve the Mullen community.”
Since his eventful move to Colorado in 1983 and over the last four decades, Coach Sargent has solidified himself as a Coloradan.  He graduated from Heritage High School and spent the next six-years in the U.S. Navy Reserve as a linguist including time served in the Gulf War.  In the meantime, he earned his BA in International Law / Public Affairs and received his master’s degree in public policy from the University of Denver.  Kyle and his wife, Rita, for the last 27 years, have strengthened their Rocky Mountain roots by growing a full-bodied family of two girls and two boys ranging in age from 21 to the youngest of 15.  Kyle is active in his community serving as chairman of their local recreation and parks district board, and they are parishioners at St. Frances Cabrini and also frequently attend Mass at St. Mark.

Coach Sargent has been around hockey his whole life, and like most successful coaches loves to give back to the game by passing along his knowledge to the next generations.  Coach has been involved in the hockey scene in the Denver area since his oldest son began playing roughly seventeen-years ago.  During that time, he has coached in just about every capacity one can coach and on every level from Mites to U18/high school.  It has been through those years of building, molding, fine-tuning all those many skaters that Coach has sharpened his coaching focus to challenge his top students, support and develop those with less skill, and to teach life skills they all can take with them down the road.  Specifically speaking, “my professional life has been dedicated to serving others, building and leading teams to success, many of which comprise people who come from different backgrounds and different motivations and goals.”

To the question of his vision for the program, it appears to be laser focused.  “My vision for the hockey program is to build on the history and the foundation already set to make the program one that parents and players will be proud to call theirs, and one that new families want to choose.  A hockey program that is based on fundamentals, competition, commitment, discipline, accountability, and family in every aspect—on the ice, off the ice, in the community.  Mullen already provides a top-notch academic experience in a faith-based environment.  Hockey families are faced with many factors in making the often-complex decision about where to send their student who plays hockey.  I envision a successful hockey program that will make the decision to bring their students to Mullen an easy one.”

Coach, here’s to breathing new life into a wanting program.
